Monday, August 17 is Discovery Day in the Yukon — 130 years since the 1896 Klondike strike. But decades before the Klondike, British Columbia had a gold fever of its own.
The Cariboo Trail by Agnes C. Laut, from the classic 32-volume Chronicles of Canada series, tells the story of the 1860s stampede into the Cariboo country: the miners, the roadbuilders, and the wagon road that opened the interior of British Columbia. Laut was one of the most widely read Canadian historians of her generation, and her narrative style still moves at a gallop.
