Joanne Copp's sculptural ceramic vessels are irresistible to both the eye and the hand. Their exteriors feel cool and satiny. To achieve this Copp burnished the surface with a smooth stone. This is an ancient technique used around the world to make a watertight container. She developed her own contemporary method of lining the vessels with different hues of gold leaf — palladium, rose and antique gold. This generated a stunning luminosity, as if light is coming from within the vessel itself. The exterior and interior meet at a swirling, exhilarating edge just as waves and stone met near her home on the exposed shoreline of BC's Sunshine Coast. In another ARTIST STUDIO BOOK Jonathon Bancroft-Snell relates her life to her work.
